How Piracy Helps Microsoft

By Vikas Shukla of Reference Designer

The sharing of pirated copies establishes Microsoft products as the standard in software. As the economy of India and China grows, people and companies begin buying legitimate versions, and they usually buy Microsoft because they are used to it. Software piracy actually boosts popularity and increases sales of their products in the long term.

Using Piracy is a business model by accident. But Microsoft must have realized that it is now a standard business model and what started as an accident has now become a business model by design.

Why Zero Piracy Level will be a death for Microsoft.

Let us assume that the governments of India and China cooperate and they very strictly enforce the copyright and do not allow a single copy of Microsoft Operating System ( Vista or XP) to be Pirated. Let us also assume zero piracy level in USA. You will think that this scheme will help US buyers as the prices will drop because of the higher volume from India and China. Let us see how this thinking will lead to death for Microsoft. If zero piracy is allowed in India and China, people will look towards open source rather than paying $50 for operating system. One out of 10 user will be a good programmer and will help open source community by developing drivers, application software. At the end of day, Microsoft will loose its users base in India and China. The Open Source community will become stronger. It may become strong enough that US users may prefer start using Open Source.

Ram S Batra ( name changed for obvious reasons) agrees. He used Visual C++ from pirated CDs from Nehru place to learn programming techniques. Something his US counterpart could not not avail for Rs 200 ( USD 5). Had piracy not been allowed, his best alternatives would have been to learn Linux Server, C on Linux platform. Now consider thousands of Rams developing Microsoft application and making people dependent upon Microsoft Application.

The business model “allowing” piracy can be compared to illicit drug business model – although may not be in derogatory sense. It is a business model – you like it or not. A drug is administered to unsuspecting individuals for free for initial doses. Then as they gradually get accustomed to the point that they can not live without it. The same drug is sold for a heavy price. Microsoft’s business model works best by making people used to it, by disallowing any competition besides an attempt to roll out a world class product.
